Like most Johnny's, Yamapi joined the agency at a young age (11). He decided to go into showbiz when he saw a drama starring JE artist Takizawa Hideaki, who is just a few years older than him. He decided that he also wanted to become an actor, and joined JE.
His big break came at the age of 14, when he hosted the Johnny's Jr. TV program, The Shounen Club with fellow 4Tops members. Through this show, he got a lot of exposure and had many opportunities to perform on stage, and he quickly rose to the top as the Jr. leader by 2002.
In 2003, he was placed into the new group NEWS as its leader. It was only supposed to be a temporary unit, but they went on to officially debut in 2004, and has since become one of JE's top groups. He has also collaborated in special units and made his solo debut in 2006,.
As well as his activities in music, he is also one of the few boys in JE who has successfully made the transition into acting. His role in the 2000 drama Ikebukuro West Gate Park earned him an award for Best Supporting Actor and set the stage for bigger roles in the future. In 2006, he finally had his first lead role in Kurosagi, and has been leading dramas ever since.
Currently, he is juggling his activities between NEWS and his dramas.
